Straight on Purpose
Share
Today, Cindy Miller breaks down how to hit the ball straight on purpose with her ‘Ben Hogan’ drill. Learn how to keep the clubface on the target line longer to hit straighter drives.

Cindy, do you continue to hit this way or is this for practice only? The same principle for hybrids, woods and irons? Thank you, Joe G
Joe G.
I hit this way in practice and on the course if I need to. It is easier to do with a tee. I would only have the club face an inch or so behind the ball on the fairway if you do it on the course with fairway woods, hybrids, and irons. Good luck.
Cindy, Do you continue hitting the driver this way or is this just for practice ? What about hybrids, woods and irons? Thank you, Joe
Joseph G.
If I am having trouble getting the face to square up at impact, I will tee off on the course using this setup. I may use this setup on the fairway as well, just not as far away from the ball. Maybe an inch or so. Just to get my focus to be behind the ball to ensure I get the head of the club to the ball before the grip. Therefore, the face squares up. Good Luck!
BEST driver tip ever!!
Thanks, Cindy.
Hughes N.
You are welcome!
While doing this drill, do you need to modify your hip rotation? Thinking by doing my normal swing , the face/path would be closed--so I need to feel like I'm really swinging out.
Gary R.
If you try to rotate left through the ball, you will miss the ball with this drill. If you swing the club head down the line through the target and allow the body to follow, you will keep the face on the path longer and hit it straight. Be sure you are aware of which swing theory you use.
That driver is very long compared to your body—to your armpits! That enables you to execute this drill more easily than me-6’6” with long arms?
David K
The length of the club should not matter. Try it! I was fit for this driver.
Is “letting the club head go” a function of the wrists?
Terry W.
YES!
Hi Cindy. Just wanted to let you know that your putting video was excellent. It got me to reassess my technique and I’m going to change it, which btw produced positive results. Thanks.
Joseph A.
GREAT NEWS!
You are welcome!
Awesome tip! Thank you. I got tired of hitting BOMB after BOMB at the range. But on the course... Ugh...
Matthew S.
I sure hope this helps you on the course!
What is the feeling in the arm joints before you let the club go?
Peter H
The arms are relaxed. Let the club head rip!
where is your left heal in relation to the golf ball, from the video it appears that the ball is forward (in front of your foot?). Should the ball be lined up with the inside left heal in your example? thanks.
Julian K
You are aligning your left heel with the imaginary golf ball that is behind the real golf ball. Therefore, the real golf ball is being hit on the through part of the club head path.
